Family now homeless

An abandoned house which has been a years-long “eyesore” and “cesspool” in a prime area of Somerset West, may be coming to its end.

The property at 33 Victoria Street was settled in a land restitution claim more than four years ago, but has not been occupied since the handover of the title deed to its new owner from Eerste River in March 2014.

For years after the previous owner moved out, the semi-detached house has been illegally occupied – on the one side a young family and on the other side several homeless people.

The constant coming and going created a disturbance. Many fires threatened homes in the vicinity. Criminal elements harassed residents. The stench due to litter and unhygienic living conditions was unbearable.

However, it appears the national Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has heeded the desperate calls of neighbours who were left to endure the problematic situation, pleading for a solution from authorities.

This week finally saw some action.

Although many may rejoice in the recent steps seemingly taken to rid the affluent community of the dilapidated property and suspected cause of squalor and crime, one problem remains – a family of four without income has been left without a home.
