Legendary Rotarian recognised for service

Strand Rotary Club recently held a surprise celebration to recognise and honour the longest serving member of the club, past district governor Ken Lester.

Lester recently reached the milestone achievement of 50 years as a member of the Strand Rotary Club.

His Rotary life goes back even further than his time with Strand Rotary; he was first admitted as a member of the now defunct Rotary Club of Standerton on 25 May 1956 and he remained a member of the club until December 1960 when he left Standerton.

Lester was inducted as a member of Strand Rotary Club on 13 November 1968 and has served as president of the club three times over the years, 1972-’73, 1982-’83 and 1998-’99, and in the 1988-’89 Rotary year he was elected as governor of the then District 935, now known as District 9350.

Lester is affectionately known in Rotary circles as “Mr Rotary” due to his vast knowledge of Rotary.

He is still an active member of Strand Rotary Club and continues to act out the principle of service above self.
