Local Bangladeshis donate to council for people in dire need

STRAND – Last Friday (8 May), more than 500 parcels of food were handed over to the Strand Moslem Council (SMC) for distribution in areas such as Rusthof, Gustrouw, Lwandle and Nomzamo.

The donation was made by the Bangladeshi community of Somerset West and Strand, who collectively represent more than 20 businesses in the area. Chairperson Abdul Azajul Islam Ripon said Bangladeshis feel they are part of the community, having served them for many years and felt compelled to provide food for those who truly need it the most.

“We love South Africa and want to support our community,” Ripon said. “We are small business owners and we call this country our home. We will continue these donations as part of our ongoing efforts to help the local community.”

The food parcels contained flour, sugar, oil, soup mix, tinned foods and other items.

The SMC’s Moulana Ghoesain Rhoda expressed gratitude to the Bangladeshi community and stated the council’s welfare wing, with their knowledge of the area and people in need, will coordinate the distribution of the parcels. “We do a monthly outreach throughout the year and we try to help as many of the needy as we can. God willing, we will be able to reach all those in our community who are in need,” Ghoesain said.

Member of Parliament Faiez Jacobs drove from Athlone to Strand for the handover, in a show of support for the Bangladeshi community.

“I’ve known Abdul for a long time and I wish to show my support for his solidarity with the community and to thank him and fellow Bangladeshis for their help during this pandemic.”
