Lulu Boys to the rescue

The heroic instincts of St George’s Rugby Club players resulted in the rescue of two young boys who were deep in the ocean and on the verge of drowning at Kogel Bay on Saturday afternoon (1 February).

The players were attending a training camp of the club and, as part of the activities for the day, had set out on a jog around the area late in the afternoon.

“On our way back we heard this woman scream for help; her children were in trouble,” said Dimitri Hendricks, a player of St George’s.

As he looked into the distance he noticed two boys of around age six and eight struggling in the water as the waves pulled them further into the ocean. “I have two children myself, so when I saw this I knew what I had to do. There wasn’t time to think,” recalled Hendricks.

He sprinted towards the water and dived straight in, still clothed in training gear.

“I got to the first boy and pulled him out of the water; his brother was further in. At that moment, I noticed other teammates also helping,” he said, mentioning the name of Francois de Lange.

“We got into the water again and swam to the other boy, and successfully pulled him out too. We checked them for injuries but they seemed fine, and were fully conscious, but were just really, really tired.”

Hendricks said the mother of the boys was especially grateful, and could not stop thanking him and the others for saving her boys’ lives.

After making sure everybody was fine, the team then went on with their training camp. Hendricks quickly changed his clothes and also rejoined the team.

“I can’t imagine what a parent has to go through if a child is in such trouble,” he related.

“I just acted on instinct and it didn’t occur to me at that moment that I’d be putting myself in danger. The most important thing for me was to bring the boys to safety.”

Hendricks said he did not get the boys’ names, nor did he know where they lived. “That they are alive and happy are the only things that matter,” he concluded.
