Macassar to get exposure on TV

From the dusty streets of a township to being featured on television in a 12-episode series in the first season, the community of Macassar is revelling in a new platform that aims to give exposure to artists and uplift locals through the telling of their stories.

The first recording of Macassar Our Pride – Community Show, took place last Thursday (5 November) at Kingdom Church in Strand, and will continue every second week before it is aired on Starsat’s channel 462, Onse TV, early next year.

Explaining the concept behind it, Clive Jefthas said local artists will be given a platform to showcase their talents, what they do, as well as their involvement in the local community.

“There will be interviews for people to share their roles on TV, whether it be sports, welfare projects, feeding schemes and community upliftment projects,” he said.

Jefthas added even local bakers and entrepreneurs will be given airtime to advertise and promote their products, labelling it a “historic milestone for the community”.

There is also a live band that performs on the show, its members also from Macassar, under musical director Reagan Robyn. The show will be hosted will be David Jantjies and Faren Sedgwick. The production is directed by Manuel Jardine and Macassar Our Pride is the executive producer.

All this is overseen by Jefthas, the chairperson of Macassar Our Pride.

“The entire production team comprises Macassar locals and we want to focus on how much the local community has overcome and pursued success all over Cape Town and the country,” he explained. “We want to show everyone what Macassar has to offer.”

The Kingdom Church is sponsored as a venue for the recordings, which is done in the presence of a full audience, also locals from Macassar, but anyone would be welcome at R50 per person.

Jardine pointed out that the main focus of the series will be to uplift the community and put Macassar on the map. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity as I am also a born and bred Macassar local,” he related.

“So this community show is also very personal to me and we anticipate greater things to come from this exposure.”
