Market enjoys success

The City of Cape Town, Sub-council 8 and the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (Murp) hosted a first ever for the community of Strand.

A night market was held for a period of nine days with the kick-off on Monday 16 December and closing on Tuesday 24 December.

Subcouncil 8 chairperson Chantal Cerfontein explained that the purpose of the market was to identify new business opportunities for local traders in the night market business, to identify the potential of the traders towards bigger achievement and local economy’s benefit, to establish a solid footing in the competitive environment of the night markets and to provide resources to continually improve the local environment for the benefit of the Strand community.

Aside from the market there was also plenty of family entertainment including the first ever Blue Ribbon pop idols competition, of which the winner walked away with a R5 000 cash prize.

“Our goals were to reduce crime significantly by proactive visible patrolling and active partnering with the police and Law Enforcement in the area, greater partnering with Murp to achieve shared objectives that will meaningfully benefit the area and to ensure a safe and clean public environment by addressing issues of maintenance and street-cleaning, pavements and public areas,” said Cerfontein, who also extended a word of appreciation and thanks to all internal stakeholders, sponsors, special guests and the organising committee.

“I would like to give a big thank you to everyone involved who made this event an experience of a lifetime,” she said.
