‘Murder-suicide’ in Simon Street

Authorities have launched an investigation into an apparent murder-suicide that claimed a local police officer and his alleged girlfriend.

The 36-year-old Macassar police constable, Sithembele Ntsebezo, and Nomakhwezi Xawuka (32) were both found shot dead in a Nomzamo street in the early hours of Sunday morning (15 March).

It is believed a heated argument between the pair ended in the fatal shooting in Simon Street, Nomzamo. The police officer apparently shot Xawuka to death before turning his service firearm on himself.

According to a Lwandle police spokesperson, on-duty police officers who were patrolling the area discovered the bodies lying next to each other at 03:00.

The spokesperson said eyewitnesses claimed the suspected couple were engaging in an argument, reportedly over money.

Relatives of Xawuka told a daily tabloid the suspected couple were arguing over Ntsebezo’s allegedly taking thousands of Xawuka’s money, which she apparently got from a stokvel.

The argument allegedly turned deadly when Ntsebezo allegedly shot the woman twice in the right arm and once in the head before shooting himself from under the chin, said the police spokesperson.

The spokesperson further said the circumstances leading to their deaths remain unclear.

It is believed Ntsebezo took off work on Saturday evening, apparently to deal with family responsibilities.

He also apparently lived with Xawuka after being separated from his wife.

Lwandle police have opened an inquest following the death of the police officer.

A case of murder is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

An enquiry for insight into the investigation was emailed to Ipid spokesperson Sontaga Seisa had garnered no response at the time of going to print.

A sibling of Xawuka’s said her bereaved family formally identified her body on Tuesday (17 March), a task that was a extremely emotionally difficult to undertake.

“My sister was a very good and respectful person; to see her lying there completely lifeless was extremely tough,” the older sibling said in a telephonic interview.

“We are all shattered and feel so lost!”

Xawuka is survived by her mother, five siblings and a 12-year-old daughter.
