DistrictMail has yet another trophy on the mantle!

For the second consecutive year the newspaper won the Hultzer Trophy for newspaper of the year – for corporate-owned paid newspapers with a circulation below 10 000 – at the annual Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) Excellence Awards last Friday night 29 June. The glitzy awards ceremony, which honours the country’s best community journalists and newspapers, was held at the Leriba Hotel and Spa in Centurion.

A panel of seasoned judges selected DistrictMail as the winner of the category, which saw fellow “heavyweights” Potchefstroom Herald (second) and Mossel Bay Advertiser (third) round up the top three. In their citation, the judges said: “For the second year running, DistrictMail is the winner in this section. Its readers get good value for money. It really is the ‘full package’. The ‘Grabouw-nuus’ insert is an added bonus.”

Being awarded the prestigious trophy for the second time is testament that DistrictMail indeed delivers on its slogan of being the “Heartbeat of the Helderberg”, said editor Tasmin Cupido. “This award comes at a fitting time as the newspaper celebrates its 90th anniversary.

“Each week our journalists and advertising representatives dig really deep to deliver a quality product that speaks to the diverse communities we serve,” she said.

“Our constant drive is to provide our loyal readers with hyperlocal news and advertising which speaks to them, while still remaining relevant in a world that is fast becoming more digitally orientated. Our sincere gratitude must go to the Helderberg and Grabouw communities for sharing their news with us and keeping the brand alive.”

This award is the second of its kind awarded to DistrictMail this year, after it was awared the ATKV Mediaveertjie for Community Newspaper of the Year for 2018 in May.

Furthermore, the newspaper also placed third in the Best Front Pages category for corporate-owned sold titles.

The 2017 FCJ awards saw about a 20% increase in the number of entries when compared to the 2016 instalment, with about 130 journalists from more than 80 local newspapers from all nine provinces entering.

DistrictMail’s journalists were also among the honoured guests at the ceremony, which saw stiff competition from all media outlets in the country.

. Tamsyn Jantjies placed joint third for the Alet Roux Award for journalists with less than three years’ experience.

. Jamey Gordon placed in the top 10 for Journalist of the Year category.

. Tasmin Cupido placed in the top seven for Editorial Comment.

. Raymond Willemse, a former DistrictMail journalist, placed in the top 10 for Columns and Sport.
