Schoolboys lead in fight against bullying

A truly exemplary pair of Strand pupils received special recognition for taking the lead in the fight against bullying at their school.

Grade 7 learners Ahmed Abdullahi (13) and Umar Karaan (12) were honoured for standing up against the form of violence becoming more prevalent at Strand Moslem Primary School. The youngsters sent out a strong message that bullying is unacceptable through an exceptional presentation delivered during assembly on the morning of Monday 25 February.

“Every child has the right to be educated in a safe and positive environment; to be able to play and learn without fear of being hurt,” said Ahmed in agreement with Umar during an interview with DistrictMail.

Although the inspirational duo have never been on the receiving end of any aggressive physical behaviour or verbal abuse by fellow youths, they discourage bullying by imploring others to stand up for themselves or anyone who has fallen victim to bullies, take action by reporting incidents, and make a concerted effort to be more compassionate and kind to one another when engaging on school grounds or the classroom.

Principal Allie Arnold is proud of the pupils for identifying the seriousness of the matter which the school is addressing by means of a campaign that includes exhibitions and regular talks by class teachers, and taking such exemplary action. “The initiative, which is evident of their caring nature, is truly heartening,” he said.

To promote more positive peer interaction, Ahmed and Umar have championed planning a puppet show portraying the impact of bullying and why its prevention is necessary for foundation phase (Grade R to 3) pupils.
