Schools phase in most grades

Three weeks since the first learners in Grade 12 and Grade 7 went back to school on Monday 1 June, many primary schools have already gradually phased in other grades, and continue to do so – reporting good attendance and an overall positive mood as learners “are glad to be back”.

But high schools will follow department guidelines for the phased reopening from 6 July.

Hotze Hugo, acting principal of Hendrik Louw Primary, said the whole school was phased in through a process of hosting two separate sessions for different groups of learners, half attend morning classes and the others in the afternoon.

“We’ve done everything to ensure a safe environment, and the kids are really happy to be back, they are delighted,” he said. “The classes are a bit shorter than normal, but smaller classes mean more attention can be given to all the learners. It’s going really well so far.”

Somerset West Primary announced the phasing in of other grades from 29 June, for Grades R, 1, 3 and 4, and 6 July, for Grades 2, 5 and 6, similarly with half of each class at school daily.

Gordon’s Bay Primary announced the phasing in of the whole school gradually between 22 June and 7 July, also with two groups of learners in each grade.

Marchant van Vuuren, principal of Hottentots-Holland High, said his school will stick to the plan announced by the Department of Basic Education.

Danie Malan, principal of Hoërskool Strand, confirmed only Grade 12s were back at school at the moment.

“From 6 July our Grade 10s and 11s will be phased in,” he said.
