State of beaches raises the ire

With the welcome warmer weather providing a taste of summer, locals look forward to the benefits and joys of living close to the sea.

With the many good Helderberg beaches, many residents will find themselves flocking to the coast – be it to soak up the warm sun, splash around in the water to cool off during a heatwave, or on a Sunday drive with the family keen on enjoying a seaside ice-cream after lunch.

Admittedly, though, this age-old tendency among Helderbergers seems tinged with a bit of hesitancy, given its downside nowadays. Masses of visitors go down to our beautiful coast and behave in disorderly ways, robbing others of the pure joy a visit to the seaside ought to entail.

The last few years have seen numerous complaints from local residents disgruntled by the terrible state of the beaches following these visits, particularly to DistrictMail. Just this week there were complaints of polluted shores, loud disturbances and inappropriate public behaviour from the past weekend’s influx of beachgoers.

Even traffic officers were hard-pressed, issuing traffic fines to visitors not adhering to road rules and regulations.

With the festive season upon us, we appeal to people to keep our beaches pristine and to be mindful of others.
