‘Thieves’ caught still driving cars

Three suspects arrested for motor vehicle theft in Lwandle were remanded in custody after a brief appearance at the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Friday 29 June.

The men, aged 27 to 30, were arrested about 17:00 on Wednesday 26 June.

The officers from Lwandle Police Station were alerted to the theft by a woman who visited the station to lay a complaint.

Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, police spokesperson, said their endeavours to combat theft of motor vehicles in the area led to the arrest of the men.

“A complainant opened a case of motor vehicle theft at Lwandle police yesterday (Wednesday 26 June) morning and officers conducted a sterling investigation,” he said.

“This resulted in the arrest of three of the suspects who were driving around with the stolen vehicle.”

Gama said all three suspects were arrested for possession of stolen property and officers will investigate and check if the suspects are linked with other cases of motor vehicle theft that have occurred in the area.

The men appeared in front of Magistrate Karen Scheepers and they all indicated that they will use a legal aid lawyer to represent them.

Scheepers immediately postponed the case for bail application on Monday 8 July.. In an unrelated incident officers of Lwandle Police Station were conducting crime prevention patrols when they discovered a stolen engine and another abandoned motor vehicle. A 52-year-old man was arrested for possession of presumed stolen property.

He is expected to make a court appearance on charges of possession of presumed stolen property.
