Various organisations and individuals in the Helderberg are doing their bit to help the less fortunate in trying times. Here’s a list of operations and initiatives currently underway in the basin. Strand: Die Lockdown-groep voorsien daagliks voedsame maaltye aan honderde inwoners van Sercorpark. Enige skenkings van kos en bestanddele is welkom. Vir nog inligting oor die Lockdown-groep, skakel 082 222 5112.

Strand: Strand Moslem Hands distributes cooked meals, soup and bread opposite the Masjidul Ummah in Gustrouw Avenue every Friday at 14:00. Food is also distributed in Sir Lowry’s Pass and bread handed out daily to patients at the Gustrouw Clinic. Gordon’s Bay: Various organisations in the seaside town are running a feeding programme for those in need. They include the Gordon’s Bay Neighbourhood Watch, Gordon’s Bay Community Policing Forum, Gordon’s Bay Outreach, Lions Club, United church and Gordon’s Bay Residents’ Association. Volunteers put food parcels together using funds donated for this purpose. Whenever you see a need for such parcels report it to the Gordon’s Bay Police Station on 021 856 2677. Somerset West: Helderberg Ubuntu Feeds by the Somerset West Rotary Club, ward councillors, local NPOs and the municipality’s Disaster Risk Management Centre provide relief through distributing food parcels to the vulnerable. Funds are collected by the Rotary Club and disbursed to purchase ingredients for food parcels or meals, which are prepared and packed by participating restaurants or organisations. Goods can be delivered to Helderberg Crime Watch’s (HCW) office on the corner of Victoria and Sergeant streets. Strand: Bambino Outreach collects baby clothes and toiletries for newborns as well as toiletries for mothers who have given birth during lockdown at Helderberg Hospital and the community health centres in Macassar and Strand. New and used clothes for babies (zero to six months) are welcome. It also collects winter clothes for toddlers. Sir Lowry’s Pass: An initiative to distribute jars of nutritious pureed vegetables to babies has been launched in the village.

Fresh jars of food are distributed daily. Donations of fresh vegetables and glass jars are welcome. For more information, contact Shelly Hendry on 071 384 4404.


Somerset West: A campaign to collect soap for distribution to communities in need, Soap4Safety, calls for donations of bars of soap.

Donation boxes are located at shopping centres and housing estates across the basin. For more details, go to the Soap4Safety page on Facebook.


Somerset West: The Mac5 Relief Project is distributing three-layer cloth masks to communities in need in the Helderberg. You can support by donating to the cause or purchasing these masks in bulk from the project. To support the initiative, purchase relief packs or obtain more information, send a WhatsApp message to Lyal on 072 828 2569 or go to the Mac5 Project page on Facebook.


Gordon’s Bay: The Animal Welfare Society (AWS) Helderberg is in desperate need of dog and cat pellets, blankets, dog and cat toys, dog shampoo, dog biscuits, office equipment and dog leads.

Somerset West: Monkey Town has launched a crowd funding campaign through BackaBuddy in a bid to keep feeding its more than 700 animals, continue paying staff salaries and maintain some operations.
