Tragic discovery in estate dam

The body of a young man was found in a dam located on a luxury housing estate just outside Somerset West earlier this week.

The deceased was identified as Aubrey Navaka (23), a Malawian citizen residing in Nomzamo and employed as a worker with one of the estate’s building contractors.

The discovery was made on Tuesday morning (11 December), after the man was reported missing over the weekend.

Macassar police were alerted to the incident at 10:25 and have opened an inquest docket.

A police spokesperson confirmed that Navaka was reported missing at the police station on Saturday (8 December), following his alleged disappearance reported to estate security the previous day.

When asked to comment on the incident, an executive director of the estate provided an extract from a communication circulated by the estate’s homeowners’ association to residents.

The extract read: “We regret to inform you of an unfortunate tragedy that occurred over the weekend at [the estate].

“A staff member of one of [the estate’s] building contractors was found by security in the estate dam and the incident is currently under investigation.

“The man was reported missing on Friday and was discovered Tuesday morning. At this stage it is a suspected drowning, but further investigation by the police is underway.”

Furthermore, the executive director referred to the incident as tragic and highly unfortunate, emphasising that it holds no apparent connection between any breach of the estate’s strict security protocols.

“It is to be noted that all contractors and their staff are vetted by our on-site security firm prior to entering the estate – an onerous yet necessary protocol,” he said.

“The estate can have as many as 2 000 people on site in any given week. As unfortunate as this incident may be, the estate has not had any such or remotely similar degree of incident since its inception – close to five years ago.”
