Vandals wreak havoc at councillor’s office

As of Friday 31 May, the Ward 85 councillor could not conduct any work from his office, after the council facility was burgled.

The office of Simthembile Mfecane was broken into and strewn with rotten food on Friday.

Mfecane has called on residents of Nomzamo and surrounding areas to stand up and show their displeasure after this incident.

He received a message alerting him to the break-in at his office in the early morning. No items were removed from the office, but old rotten food mixed with water was strewn all over the office. The stench hung in the air as you entered the office.

Mfecane revealed that he did not know why his office had been vandalised or how he would work on the day.

The councillor said he was taken aback by these actions as he was not aware what it meant.

“As I speak I don’t have nor know where I would work. The chairs and computers are sprinkled with this rotten food,” he said.

Mfecane said the community needed to show by action that they are against this behaviour. “As councillors, we are on our own and I worry about the safety of the people I work with. There was nothing stolen from my office and I have opened a case with the police,” said Mfecane.

The break-in at the council office occurred the same evening as the petrol-bombing of the Ikhwezi Clinic. Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama of Lwandle police say they are investigating the matter.
