Youngsters survive high-speed car crash

A group of young friends survived a car accident on the N2 outside Somerset West last Saturday (5 May).

According to Captain Anneke van der Vyver, acting Somerset West police spokesperson, the incident occurred at 15:50 when the driver of a silver Volkswagen Golf Velocity allegedly lost control of the vehicle.

The car apparently veered off the road, hit a pole and crashed into bushes on the side of the highway.

Van der Vyver confirmed there was no other vehicle involved in the accident.

The driver, Ajamamkela Sibaza (19) from Kraaifontein, recalled travelling along the N2 in the direction of Cape Town with four friends when he noticed a vehicle moving into his lane.

Sibiza explained that he quickly moved onto the shoulder of the road to dodge the car and avoid a collision.

“As I moved back onto the highway, I lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and rolled,” recalled Sibiza.

The teenager said he felt bad about the traumatic turn of events, but was also grateful that everyone escaped with their lives intact, despite a few lacerations and bruises.

Sibaza added that, although he is not worried about the car, it has not been written-off and can be repaired.

Van der Vyver said an accident report had been compiled.

. In a separate incident the same morning (Saturday), a vehicle burst into flames on the N2 outside Macassar.

According to Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters responded to a burning 1975 Volkswagen Beetle at 08:54.

“The fire was extinguished before the firefighters’ arrived,” said Layne.
