All Saints tournament over Easter

Club rugby teams and their supporters will descend on Helderzicht Sports Ground when All Saints Rugby Club hosts its inaugural tournament over the Easter Weekend.

The competition, which will also act as great preparation for the upcoming club rugby season, will be held from Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 April. No matches will be played on Good Friday.

The tournament also presents the perfect opportunity to celebrate a new crop of aspiring rugby stars, who will be thrust into the limelight over the three-day tournament. “It is our pleasure to host a tournament that has been described as a key component of youth development through rugby,” the club said in a statement.

“We hope to witness the depth of rugby talent that we have in this region and we are equally excited to see how things unfold as the tournament progresses.”

The competition will comprise eight teams, to be divided into two groups of four teams each. In the first round, to be played under lights on Wednesday and Thursday, four matches will be played.

On the Saturday, the winners of the four matches will lock horns, while the losers will tackle one another. The teams ending in first and second position in the groups will advance to the winners’ section. Then it’s do-or-die for the tournament’s top teams, as they meet in the play-offs.

“We are confident that the games will be successful and the rules of the game will be applied until the final whistle blows. On the field of play, the game teaches the value of cooperating with others and striving towards a goal,” the statement read.

“Amid the rivalry, friendships are also established and win or lose, it is our hope that each and every player will emerge better through this experience. We are confident that the flair and skill will attract more fans to the venue, painting the area with the atmosphere with which our beloved sport is associated.”

And there are fantastic cash prizes up for grabs, with the overall winners walking away with R5 000 and a trophy, while the second-placed club will pocket R2 500, third R1 500 and fourth and below R500 each.

Interested clubs are invited to enter a team of 25 players at no charge. Teams need to be entered by Thursday 28 February; the date of the draw will be communicated to the participating teams at a later stage.

All players and spectators will have to pay the gate fee of R15 per person and R10 per vehicle. Elderly persons who are able to produce a valid Sassa card will be exempt from paying.

Local entrepreneurs looking to showcase and sell their wares are invited to book a stall at a minimal fee. Only the beer garden will be managed by the host club.
