Bulldogs ready for rugga season

Parel Vallei High School’s rugby teams have not been scheduled to play against their traditional Helderberg rivals in Western Province league matches this season.

However, a very demanding second Premier League season lies ahead for the Bulldogs, culminating in PV’s trans-provincial year end derby against Pearson High School at home this year.

“Last year we survived and showed we are ready to take on the best in the league with our first ever full-day match-up against Rondebosch Boys’ and Bishops. This year we take on Stellenberg High and Paarl Gymnasium,” said Thinus Pienaar, PV’s director of rugby.

A lot has been happening behind the scenes at the Somerset West school, with several changes and additions to the PV Rugby coaching structure for this year.

“A ‘new’ backbone for PV Rugby has been created – a PV staff member is in charge of an age group as head coach and now forms part of an official PV Rugby Leadership group,” he explained.

“We meet every Monday in season, escalate concerns, suggestions, discuss players and performance, as well as general PV Rugby ambassadorship across the board.

“All proposed game patterns, fixed facets, the Bulldog defence and attack philosophies are transmitted to the entire programme by our own top coaches, all part of our new Bulldog vision.”

Another new addition is the hosting of the PV Rugby Dad and Son Camp at the school campus for the first time in five years.

“I’m mildly excited about the first team numbers for 2020 and look forward to the composition of the team when these Bulldogs play at DHL Newlands on 14 March.”

Pienaar said that 12 players of the last year’s under-19A team are available again including Keanuh Michaels (WP), Kyle Slater (WP), Roux Niewoudt, Ashton van Earth, Jady Labuschagne, Sieg Goldner, Eric Kelly, Markus Dempsey, Michael Borcherds, Chadwin Brown and Cody Hing.

He also mentioned last year’s talented under-16 players who have been part of the off-season programme for the last four months, naming Charles Booysen, Jan Harm Salomons and Mateo Titus.

The under-19A team is led by Angelo Fritz (head coach), Beau Schoeman and technical advisor Piet Faasen. Wimpie Burger joins as full-time team manager and Charl Marx of Blaauw and Vennote is responsible for the biokinetics.

This season’s upcoming highlights are:
