As we head into the home straight of the Western Province club rugby season, the harsh reality of relegation for a few clubs has set in.
With one match left for St George’s, their Super League A journey will sadly come to an end as they are mathematically out of the running for at least a 13th place finish and a play-off match.
A few close losses have come back to bite them, but we all know that they will come back stronger.
At the time of going to print, the fixtures for the Top 9 Promotion League for the 2019 Super League C were not released, but Raithby Universals will be in action this week.
The rest of the weekend’s fixtures are as follows:
All Saints are currently on a losing streak, but are surprisingly somehow not in the relegation zone. Picking up losing bonus points and scoring four or more tries per match has kept them ticking along. Bellville has had a few great results of late and few close losses that has kept them contenders for a top-six finish. Homeground advantage and a good all-round team makes them the favourites for this one.
Prediction: All Saints to lose by six or more.
Berge are currently top of Super League B and will be looking to get maximum points against bottom of the log Kraaie. With Franschhoek in a close second, Berge cannot afford to slip up, but few would bet against it. This league is going down to the wire, but the boys from the Helderberg, in my opinion, have the easier pick of the draw when it comes to their remaining games.
Prediction: Helderberg to win by 16 or more.
The Lulus might be down, but they are not out. The return of former head coach Wilbur Kraak, now as head coach of Kloof, will be nothing more than a bit more encouragement for St George’s to end well this season. Last week’s performance against UCT showed glimpses of what they are really capable of, and against a team that they could easily match physically, this game could end up being really entertaining. SK Walmers are very unpredictable and have nothing to lose in this game. They will come to play.
Prediction: St Georges to win by five or more.
This derby could end up being a one sided affair if Sir Lowrians don’t pull themselves together. Macassar are top of Super League C but have shown some cracks lately which the Navy Train will want to expose. Macassar has a well-balanced team and could target their opponents upfront or out wide; this is what Sir Lowrians will struggle to counter.
Prediction: Macassar to win by 16 or more.
