Exercise body and mind with bowls

Western Province Bowls are taking bowls to a new level.

You may ask, “Bowls – old man’s marbles?” No. The long standing perception of bowls is no more!

Bowls is the fastest growing sport in many countries and, after this season, WP Bowls is now one of the fastest growing districts in South Africa.

The organisation has a long way to go when it comes to catching up to other nations; however, the process has certainly begun.

This year WP Bowls began an awareness drive in schools across the district by offering introductory lessons to schools, whether on the school premises or at the neighbourhood bowling club.

The federation, after just one season, is thrilled to report there has already been a sharp increase in junior membership. More and more of the younger generation are finding out that bowls is an exciting and challenging game that can be played at any level.

You often hear “I wish I had started playing bowls sooner” from many accomplished sports enthusiasts. Bowls is not only about physical exercise, but it also stimulates the brain and is an excellent team builder creating a wonderful social environment for corporate days, birthdays, bachelors and the list goes on.

The best news for this neighbourhood, is that the Somerset West Bowling Club has grabbed a new WP initiative by the horns – a December Holiday Clinic.

This programme is not only about learning a new sport, but it also includes fitness exercises, team work and life skills with the club’s qualified coaches.

Somerset West Bowling Club has now also opened up its greens to the community every Friday evening this summer. This is proving a very good way to spend time with one’s family after a long week or to miss the traffic, or simply just to relax into the weekend.

Bowls equipment and instructions, if necessary, will be provided free of charge – so, just arrive! All ages are welcome, no costs are involved and you can wear flat sports shoes or go barefoot. Come and enjoy something new and a summer evening at the club.
