H’berg gymnasts off to nationals

A group of Helderberg gymnasts will compete at the highest national level this week, when they showcase their skills at the South African national gymnastics championships.

The achievements of 40 members of Helderberg Gymnastics Connection (HGC) at the provincial championships at the Western Cape Sport School in Kuils River in August led to their selection to the provincial team. The athletes had to garner an average of between 26.00 and 30.80 to win selection to the squad.

Lynette Roux of HGC says the club has been running for more than 15 years. “Karen Henry took the reins of the club in 2005, and worked herself up to head coach, assisted by men’s head coach Karl Schneeberger,” she explains.

“The club consists of different categories: beginners classes for children aged three to six; Level 1 to 3 artistic gymnastics for men and women; Level 4 to 6 high level artistic gymnastics for men and women; Level 7 to 9 high performance artistic gymnastics for men and women; trampoline for Level 1 to 9; and tumbling for Level 1 to 9.”

The club’s tumbling and trampoline squad are in action at the SA Gym Games in Pretoria from Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 October, while others will participate in the women’s and men’s artistic gymnastics disciplines.

According to Roux, the girls named in the provincial team all competed in the artistic gymnastic discipline on the uneven bars, beam, floor and vault apparatus and clinched nine overall first place positions in their various levels.

Zayna Dollie, Chaunte Revell, Gillian Wake, Katelyn McDonald, Sabryn Joubert, Linel Kruger, Carla Elbrecht, Elrina Greyling, Kayleigh Erwee and Janey Power all stood at the top of the podium at the provincial championships.

Roux attributes the gymnasts’ and club’s success to the dedication of Henry and Schneeberger, adding that the club’s high standard of performance and the gymnasts’ commitment and hard work also contributes to achieving podium places.

This is the first year such a large HGC contingency participates in the championships, with a maximum 20 gymnasts participating in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling flying the flag in previous years.

“Besides artistic gymnastics, we also host an annual year-end display showcase or concert, in December where we all our gymnasts, including the beginners, are included,” Roux says.
