HCC stumble against log leaders

The first team of Helderberg Cricket Club will be kicking themselves after they failed to capitalise on a sterling bowling performance in their match against First Division B log leaders Montrose Cricket Club.

The two sides locked horns in a Western Province club cricket match at Helderzicht Sports Grounds on Saturday 24 November. Despite the home side’s prolific display with the leather, they could not put the final nail in the coffin as they suffered a narrow 17-run defeat.

HCC won the toss and elected to bowl on a very uneven surface. Opening bowlers Dexter Hindley

(8-1-33-1) and Keanu Barry (7-1-17-4) started with force, finding very good areas and forcing the Montrose batsmen to play at every delivery.

The log leaders were surprised by the great display of fast bowling by the hosts and their batsmen failed to provide them with the start they needed. At 55/4, the visitors tried to steady the ship, but the HCC captain Marcello Thomas had other plans.

He knew they had to be clinical to keep Montrose’s tally under 100 runs and called on the experienced Ebrahim Latief (5-2-21-1) and Shane Fredericks (8-4-11-4) to rub salt in the opposition’s wounds. Fredericks and Latief proved to be too good and dismissed the rest of the Montrose batting line up with ease.

The visitors only added another 32 runs, ending their innings on 87 (all out).

With a mere 88 runs needed to record a win, the hosts were confident as they went in to bat. But they soon lost a few early wickets and were struggling to consolidate the innings on 18/3 after seven overs.

But Keenan Brinkhuis (15) and Thomas (12) managed to bring some stability and played a good hand in taking their team’s score to 54/4 after 27 overs, before Brinkhuis lost his wicket.

A few shocking calls by the umpire swung the game, which looked to be in the bag at that stage, on its back and the home team were staring down the barrel.

The rampant Montrose bowlers eventually managed to topple the HCC batsmen out for a mere 70 runs and the home side suffered an agonising 17-run defeat.

The HCC second team also failed to secure victory in their league encounter against Brackendell CC at Helderzicht.

The home side won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat. Brackenfell started well, with their openers notching up a stand of 68 before the first wicket fell. From there on out, the HCC bowlers battled to apply pressure on their opponents, who managed to put up a mammoth target of 291 for the hosts to chase down.

The pick of the HCC bowlers were captain Adeeb Bailey (10-1-36-2) and Johan Cyster (10-0-54-2).

With an inexperienced batting line-up, the hosts lost wickets regularly and were struggling on 15/4. Despite the efforts of Mario Pietersen (30) and Luwayne Soldaat (22), the HCC second team were eventually bowled out for 120 and suffered a 171 defeat.
