MC Boys outclass Strand United

A lot can happen in club rugby in just a week. This statement was proven at the weekend, when Macassar reclaimed their number one spot on the Super League C log after narrowly edging hosts Strand United 18-13 on Saturday 28 July.

The match, played at a packed Abattoir Sports Ground, lived up to expectations in yet another enthralling derby encounter with the visitors still unbeaten in all derbies this season. They are set to face Sir Lowrians RFC on Saturday 8 September and will be hoping for their third derby win in the league.

Bradley Daniels made matters very difficult for the home side to get back into the game and on the scoreboard in the first half. Daniels, who drew first blood when he succeeded with an early penalty, set the passionate spectators up for an enticing affair.

United’s Hishaam Slamdien levelled matters soon after Daniels’ penalty (3-3). With the first quarter gone, the match was evenly poised. Macassar’s eighthman Clint Stewart scored the first try of the match following a lengthy spell inside United’s half. Relentless pressure from the visitors allowed Stewart to power through the United defence. Daniels added the extras (3-10).

The home side muscled through many attacking phases deep inside the MC half, but the disciplined defending from the visitors denied United any further points in the first half. Virgil Jordaan rounded off a well-orchestrated move to gift Macassar a 3-15 lead at half-time.

As much as the half-time scoreline suggests a dominance from Macassar, the error count racked up by the hosts proved costly and is not indicative of an outclassed United side. However, in derbies it is the side that converts possession and territory into points that usually walks away with the spoils of war – in this case, it was a very clinical and resilient MC Boys side.

Following some stern words from the coaches at half-time, the home side looked poised for a magnificent comeback. Daniels managed a solo penalty in the second stanza – Macassar’s only points for the remainder of the match (3-18).

United’s brilliant attacking and never-say-die attitude soon paid dividends when Abduragman de Beer and Fadiel Manevick crashed over the whitewash, reducing Macassar’s lead to just five points (FT: 13-18).

In the final minutes of the match, United applied constant pressure on a very stable and strong MC side, but the visitors held out and absorbed the pressure of the relentless United effort.

Macassar head into the final few weeks unbeaten. With both Daniels and Garth de Bruin’s kicking accuracy, the MC Boys will be in good stead as they head into the final weeks of the regular season.
