MC Boys unstoppable at Riverside Park
06 September 2018

Three tries by Macassar were enough to see off a spirited Kylemore in a top-of-the-table clash at Riverside Park on Saturday 1 September.

The Super League C log leaders had to contend with an early morning funeral as player Markwin Jacobs was laid to rest as well as late personnel changes as a result of ill-health. Flyhalf Bradley Daniels contributed 18 points as Macassar claimed a 28-24 victory over Kylemore.

The victory means the MC Boys go into the final stretch of the regular season with a five-point cushion at the top of the overall standings and looking well-set for a semi-final place at City Park come Saturday 29 September. With two regular season fixtures remaining, it’s hard to think the MC Boys will let go of their current position on the table.

Before a packed Riverside Park, both teams played with width and looked to spread the ball at all costs – an entertaining brand of rugby that so easily can go wrong when defensive organisations are not complete. Kylemore found it difficult to penetrate the unwavering Macassar defence, in a match that hung in the balance until the last minute of play.

Griffin Solomons pounced on a loose ball at a breakdown and found Daniels, who ran in under the sticks for a five-pointer after five minutes of play; Daniels converted (7-0).

Kylemore hit back with two penalty goals, before Cameron Isaacs went over from close range after a good period of sustained pressure from the MC Boys. Daniels again raised the flags (14-6).

At the sound of the half-time whistle, Macassar were up by 17-12 and things looked pretty good for the hosts. Even though they tried hard, and succeeded with four penalties, Kylemore simply had no answer to the relentless pressure from the MC Boys.

At the start of the second stanza, Kylemore started to build some confidence and intensity, and soon levelled the score with an unconverted try (17-17). Daniels succeeded with another penalty to take the score to 20-17.

In the 65th minute inspirational captain Burnodick Julius sustained a shoulder injury and was replaced by veteran loose forward Gurston Cupido, who made an immediate impact at the front of the Macassar attack. Jaydean Machelm plugged away at a defensive line-out and the MC Boys started an attack 10 m inside their opponent’s half.

Cupido pierced the defence and, with quick recycling, the ball went through the hands for Eugene Jordaan to cross the whitewash as the match headed into the final few minutes (25-17).

Chris Langeveld cleared his bench with eight minutes left in the game to inject some energy and close out the match with a potential last gasp bonus-point try. The MC Boys almost succeeded, but Garth de Bruin was met with stern defence and lost the ball.

Kylemore pounced on the mistake and went the length of the field to score a seven-pointer (25-24). Daniels calmed matters with a last-minute penalty (28-24).

A mistake two metres from the visitors’ goal line, saw Kylemore give their all as they penetrated the MC defence with attack after attack in an effort to clinch the match with a final score with no time left on the clock. But this was not to be, as the spectacular exhibition of club rugby came to a close with Macassar holding out for the four-point victory.
