Powerlifters break records

On Saturday 24 August, 100% RAW Powerlifting held its national championships at West Workout Gym in Somerset West.

RAW Powerlifters gathered to compete and break South African records as well thrill spectators of family and friends with strength, skill and commitment to the sport they dearly love.

The women’s division started with Savana Nadler achieving a 67,5 kg squat, 40 kg bench press and 115 kg deadlift, giving her a total of 222,5 kg. These were all SA records in the 60 kg junior division.

In the women’s 75 kg divison, Amy Rheeder recorded a 92,5 kg squat, 55 kg bench press and 130 kg deadlift to finish with a total of 277,5 kg.

Up next in the 82,5kg class was Juanita Baxter, who did a 50 kg squat, 45 kg bench press and 82,5 kg deadlift, and ending with a total of 177,5kg.

In the 90 kg class, Patty Pretorius broke all the SA masters’ records with a 142,5 kg squat, 77,5 kg bench press and 167,5 kg deadlift giving her a total of 387,5 kg. This also saw he win the title of overall women’s lifter of the day!

The final women’s category was the 100 kg class, where Shana Grobler finished with a 125 kg squat, 62,5 kg bench press and 145 kg deadlift – a total of 332,5 kg all SA senior records in this division.

The men’s section was started by Sean Brockenshire in the 60 kg class with a 150 kg squat, 90 kg bench press and 190 kg deadlift – a total of 410kg. The former world champion set SA records with all his lifts.

In the 75 kg division a new lifter, Craig Jaffa, came away with a 140 kg squat, 100 kg bench press and 190 kg deadlift, a total of 430 kg in his first-ever competition.

In the same division Remi Fredericks smashed all the SA senior records and came away the title of overall men’s winner for the day. His 205 kg squat, 130 kg bench press and his monsterous 277,5 kg deadlift gave him a massive total of 612,5 kg for the day.

In the 82,5 kg division, Wihan Voges won the title for overall junior lifter of the day with his lifts of 142,5 kg squat, 87,5 kg bench press and 200 kg deadlift, a total of 430 kg.

In the 90 kg class, a good battle ensued between Adriaan Botha and Duane Sales with both getting a 170 kg squat. Adriaan edged out Duane with a 125 kg bench press, ahead of Duanne’s 120kg.

When the bar hit the floor for the deadlifts, Duane’s 240 kg was too much for Adriaan, whose last lift was 220 kg. So when the dust settled, Duanne had a total of 530 kg against Adriaan’s 515 kg, making him the winner of this division.

In the 100 kg, class Joshua Immez achieved a 160 kg squat, 130 kg bench press and 210 kg deadlift to finish the competition with a 500 kg total.

According to RAW chairperson Howard Cladingbowl, the competition was a success thanks to the family and friends who gathered to loudly cheer on the lifters as they hoisted and ground out the various lifts.

He thanked the referees, scoreboard officials, spotters and loaders for their time and hard work throughout the event.

“I also want to thank Pro-Nutrition for their excellent prizes and Powerade who helped with their sponsorship too,” he said.

“A final world of thanks to West Workout for their sponsorship of medals and trophies for the day, as well as the gym staff for giving the lifters a time to shine at what they love and tirelessly stay committed to.”

The next event is the Push, Pull and Curl competition in December.
