Racers, start your engines for motor sport season

Motor sport has been given the green light by government to resume events sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa (MSA).

The governing body announced it had been granted full permission from Nathi Mthetwa, national Minister of Sport and Recreation, last week. However, MSA-sanctioned events will commence only once suitable arrangements have been made with event organisers in relation to Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

The go-ahead follows a formal submission by MSA and incorporates a number of conditions prescribed by the department, including a restriction on spectators, the presence of a Covid-19 compliance officer at events, strict cleaning protocols, compulsory wearing of face masks and temperature screening of all visitors.

Said MSA chairperson Anton Roux: “We are very thankful to the department and the minister for the constructive way in which they engaged with us to find solutions and for allowing us to restart motor racing. Motor racing is a vibrant sporting code and an important contributor to the livelihood of businesses and event venues.”

MSA CEO Adrian Scholtz said the body had been preparing for a resumption of activities. He added the organisation would communicate with its members and re-configure the 2020 racing calendar.
