Run the Slave Route and learn the Cape’s history

The popular Slave Route Challenge, powered by Brimstone, will take runners, walkers, fitness enthusiasts and curious history buffs through Cape Town’s historic streets on Sunday 31 March.

From City Hall, District 6, Gardens and the Company Gardens to Wale Street, Bo-Kaap, Sea Point, Green Point and through the Castle of Good Hope, the race not only shows off the city’s historic monuments, but also its diversity and beauty. One of the favourite points is Koesister Hill in the Bo-Kaap, where runners are greeted by a bevy of residents with these delectable Cape Malay confections.

The challenge, hosted by Brimstone Itheko Sport Athletic Club, comprises four separate events – a half marathon, 10 km run, 10 km walk and 5 km fun run. The race beneficiary is the Mary Harding School, which provides vital educational assistance to young people who have mild to moderate mental impairment.

Admission to the half marathon costs R130 for licensed runners and R190 for unlicensed athletes. Senior (20 and older) licensed runners entering the 10 km run will pay R85 and R125 for unlicensed athletes. Junior licensed athletes will pay R65 for the 10 km run, while unlicensed juniors will pay R90.

Entering the 10 km walk will set you back R50, while admission to the 5 km fun run costs R50. Only the half marathon and 10 km run are timed events.

The closing date for entries is Sunday 17 March. Enter online at www.webtickets.co.za or at any Sportsman’s Warehouse outlet.
