S-West bowlers run rampant over Blue Bells

It was a memorable and downright brilliant victory for Somerset West Cricket Club when they outclassed Blue Bells CC, defending a 264 target with impeccable bowling.

Playing away from Radloff Park, SWCC lost the toss and were sent in to bat and set a target.

The home side struggled to find form as the SWCC batsmen found the boundary rope at regular intervals. The fine batting form of the SWCC top order continued where they left-off in their narrow defeat against Bishop Lavis CC the previous week.

The ground work was laid by the SWCC batsmen. The opening partnership between Donovan Martin and Larry Morkel of 50 runs meant the runs were coming thick and fast for the visitors. Morkel lost his wicket through a silly error when he chipped the ball to midwicket.

Jacques Fourie joined Martin and the pair put up a staggering 131-run partnership for the second wicket. Martin was back in the hut, contributing 64 runs with the bat.

Fourie fell short of his second century in as many weeks, with the in-form batsman losing his wicket with his score on 84. SWCC, however, weren’t, done causing havoc to Blue Bells’ bowling figures. Estiaan Groenewald (50*) knocked a few boundaries and frustrated the home side’s bowlers.

With the target firmly set at 264, the Blue Bells batsmen were in hot water from the first over and never really recovered, with skipper Michael Osborn (2/4) taking the first wicket in the first over of the innings.

The visitors annihilated the batting order, removing the hosts for just 54 runs. Debutant Adrian van Reenen had a dream start to his SWCC career, claiming 6/15 in his 10 overs. He was the thorn in the flesh of the Blue Bells’ batsmen.

Disciplined bowling complemented by excellent fielding thrust SWCC to a convincing 210-run victory.

The men from Radloff Park are on the road again this Saturday, this time they face Pinelands on 1 December.
