S-West schools hold own at race

Parel Vallei High School is tied in second place on the Spur Schools MTB League table after two rounds,

In the primary schools’ league, another Somerset West school, Beaumont Primary, sits in a strong seventh place with Applewood Primary School (Elgin) is in 11th place.

The second round of the Spur Schools MTB League was held at Bloemendal Wine Estate in Durbanville on Saturday 3 August.

One of the greatest successes of the league has been in how it has inspired thousands of young people to get on their bikes – and there seems to be no end in sight, as 907 riders from 46 high and 77 primary schools from across the province took the starting line across the age groups, from seven to 18.

This was the league’s biggest single event since its first race in 2009, beating the previous record of 850 riders set in Somerset West earlier this year.

Johan van Zyl (HTS Drostdy) took the win in the junior men’s category and, in doing so, retained the red Spur Leader’s Jersey. The Junior Women’s race was won by Stefke Tolmay (DF Malan High School) in commanding fashion as she crossed the line with a gap of just under two minutes to the second-placed rider, Nienke Mostert (HTS Drostdy).

Following the first two rounds, the high school table is led by Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, the 2018 Western Cape and national winners, followed by Parel Vallei and HTS Drostdy in second, and Durbanville High in third place. The primary school division is led by Van Riebeeckstrand Primary, ahead of Kenridge and Durbanville Primary schools.

V The next round will be held at Montana High School in Worcester on Saturday 24 August. For more information, especially on entering, visit the Spur Schools MTB League’s official website on www.spurmtbleague.co.za.
