SLB offers club rugby fans plenty of action to date

With the Ramadan break coming into effect this week, we will be seeing less fixtures for Helderberg teams over the coming month.

This past weekend did not go by without its fair share of drama, as Macassar beat Helderberg at Charles Morkel Stadium not for the first time in recent seasons – read the full match report on page 28.

Super League B seems to be the most competitive at this stage of the season.

St George’s will be off along with Strand Pioneers and Strand United for the next three weeks, while Berge will also be on a break this week.

Let’s focus on the teams in action this coming weekend:

  • All Saints vs Franschhoek (Franschhoek)

All Saints come off a win two weeks ago, but the fixture against Franschhoek was always going to be a tough fixture on the road for them. Franschhoek have found good form and will enjoy playing at home after a few weeks on the road. While they may have pencilled in five log points for this match, I think the home side will only get away with four points.

Prediction: All Saints to lose by 14 or more

  • Macassar vs Bellville (Bellville)

The MC Boys are on cloud nine after their victory over Berge, but travelling to Bellville, who have also impressed in recent weeks, won’t be easy.

Both these clubs have travelled to more fancied opponents bagged hard-fought victories over the last few weeks, so this will be an interesting encounter. Homeground advantage will count in the hosts’ favour, but a confident Macassar are often dangerous.

Prediction: Macassar to lose by three or more

  • Strand vs Langa (Gustrouw)

Strand play at Gustrouw for a second successive weekend, but face stiffer opposition in Langa, especially when compared to their opponents last weekend, Elsies River. Langa thrashed Morning Stars last week, a team that beat Strand earlier this season, so they are no pushovers. Strand will be confident after two victories on the trot.

Prediction: Strand to win by five or more

  • Raithby Universals vs Scottsdene-Central (Raithby)

RU might be a bit rusty after some weeks off, but at least their returning fixture is a home game. After a relatively positive start to the season, including a draw away from home, Raithby will be upbeat about their chances, but face a Scottsdene side that put 50 past Blue Jets last week.

Prediction: Raithby to lose by eight or less

  • Sir Lowrians vs Imiqhayi (Khayelitsha)

The Navy Train got a head of steam recently and will travel to Khayelitsha with their tails up. Another victory for the team from Sir Lowry’s Pass will further boost their confidence after a tough few seasons.

Prediction: Sir Lowrians to win by 15 or more
