SLC honour beckons for MC Boys

Macassar Rugby Club produced a clinical all-round performance to power their way to a 10-24 victory over Elsies River United in a Super League C encounter in Elsies River on Saturday 25 August.

Once again, the MC Boys delivered a masterclass display of rugby in very daunting weather conditions. The visitors were virtually impenetrable on defence, while they pounced on point-scoring opportunities that came their way.

Macassar comfortably claimed their ninth win of the season and are one step closer to what could be a first league title since 2005. Based on this performance, the MC Boys will feel confident they can go all the way, playing with the power and precision of a championship team from start to finish.

Elsies River displayed plenty of attacking endeavour in the opening exchanges, but could not penetrate the resolute MC Boys’ defence.

With 11 minutes played, flanker Jaydean Machelm pounced on a loose ball and great awareness by scrumhalf Riaan Slamdien led to the visitors finding touch 5 m from the Elsies goal-line.

They applied pressure and Clint Stewart went over for the first score of the match to add to his impressive try-scoring tally (0-5).

Things weren’t going well for the home side, as the MC Boys showed their class with good tactical game management and Garth de Bruin dictating field territory.

A scintillating counter-attack soon after resulted in a try for centre Andy de Bruin, coming in on the angle and finding an open path to the goal line after 28 minutes of play. Garth de Bruin added the extras (0-12).

Macassar dominated territory and possession for the remainder of the stanza. Leonard Jacobs seemed to have hit back in time for the MC Boys when he went over to score. Garth de Bruin raised the flags to close out the first half with the score at 0-19.

Playing against the wind in the second half the MC Boys shifted their plans and hard-hitting forward play was the order of the last 40.

Front rower Arno Linders made a bulldozing run that freed Lynson Andries to score, but the try was disallowed after the ref consulted his assistant.

Rain was now pelting down and play see-sawed from one end of the field to the other, making it difficult to execute plays.

Ten minutes into the second half Elsies scored their first points with a successful penalty goal (3-19).

Macassar managed to score their bonus-point try in the 65th minute through winger Eugene Jordaan. Garth de Bruin missed the conversion (3-24).

Elsies scored a consolation converted try, but it did not detract from a Macassar performance that sent out an emphatic statement ahead of the anticipated top-of-the-table encounter with Kylemore Rugby Club at Riverside Park, Macassar this weekend.

V Point scorers: tries Z Clint Stewart, Andy de Bruin, Leonard Jacobs, Eugene Jordaan; conversions Z Garth de Bruin (2).
