Streicher scoops top prize

The annual DistrictMail Let’s Play initiative culminated in a prestigious awards ceremony, where some of the Helderberg’s best young sporting talent was celebrated on the evening of Monday 25 November at The Grille Shack along Clarence Drive.

Among the sport stars deserving of honour was 16 year old golfer Megan Streicher of Somerset West, who continues to climb up the national women’s golf rankings. Megan won the Boland women’s and junior champs, the high schools’ individual champs and obtained first place at the Friends of Engelberg Challenge.

She was awarded the trophy for the most improved junior ranked player for the year in April and also competed in Indonesia in May, placing second runner-up in the girls’ division.

Her year ended on a high with an invite to the Annika Invitational in Florida early next year.

On the night of the DistrictMail Let’s Play awards ceremony, Megan was awarded the highly coveted title of 2019 DistrictMail Let’s Play Sport Star. She was nominated, selected and profiled as the DistrictMail Let’s Play Sport Star of the Month for April.

SuperSport was present on the evening, with Let’s Play media liaison Eduard Rosenstrauch as the master of ceremonies.

All the monthly Let’s Play sports stars were presented with certificates and gifts in recognition of their continued sporting achievements. Rosenstrauch also provided insight into the success of the Let’s Play initiative, which seeks to enable children to live healthier lives through sport, as well as DistrictMail’s 13-year involvement since the competition’s inception.

South African athlete and under-18 world high jump champion Breyton Poole was guest speaker at the event.

Poole, a previous winner of the Let’s Play Award and multiple accolade holder at international level, gave a moving message of never giving up and trustings one’s abilities.

“The year before I took up high jump I never thought I’d be a world champion. But it happened and it taught me that anything is possible if you work hard and trust God,” he said.

Competing for the coveted overall title were rugby prodigy Bronisha Hess, kickboxer, rugby player and discus athlete Ethan Happie, cross country and track athlete Zenade October, rising javelin star Willie Liebenberg, women’s and junior weightlifting champion Phia-Mare Phillips, national judo champion in her age group and cross country record breaker Marietjie Cilliers, cricket master Logan Dupont, tennis ace Anathi Nofotyo and Liam Martin, cricket and rugby captain and star at Hoërskool Strand.

In the end only one winner could be chosen and that coveted prize went to Streicher, whose golfing performances continues to garner international recognition.

Winning the title of DistrictMail Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year automatically makes her a candidate for the Let’s Play Hennie Petersen Trophy, awarded to the top sport star of all the regional titles in the province.

The function was recorded by the SuperSport Let’s Play team and will be aired on DStv during the December/January holidays, together with an interview with winners.

Screening dates will be made available as soon as it is known.

DistrictMail expresses its sincere thanks to The Grille Shack for availing its premises for the function.
