Surf contest is epic

Surf4Life hosted its ninth annual surfing contest at Strand Pipe on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September.

The local community came together to support the annual fundraiser for the NPO, which teaches children to surf as well as water safety, and assists fellow surfers affected by cancer, working with cancer organisations.

A record 82 entries were received for the competition and a development clinic was also held for 20 surfers.

The surfing clinic invited the children to join a yoga session to warm up before heading into the water, where they enjoyed a fun surf in good conditions. Later the day they were treated to a surf contest, T-shirt, goodies and some lunch.

Contestants also got their hands dirty in a beach clean-up with Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement.

The contest started on Saturday and Sunday at 08:00 with the Surf4Life team setting up beach tents and scaffolding early each morning. Each day saw seven hours of surfing completed.

The wind blew a bit, but the waves were good and contestable throughout the event
