SWCC rake in league wins

The first team of Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) was in action at the weekend, hosting St Augustine’s CC in a 50-over First Division league encounter at Radloff Park on Saturday (8 February).

The SW skipper, Michael Osborn, won the toss and asked the visitors to take first strike, and they were off to a shaky start thanks to good bowling from veteran Vincent Castle and Osborn.

They were 40/1 at one stage, but poor fielding by the home team allowed the visitors to build partnerships and eventually post a competitive score of 166 (all out) in 49 overs. Christo Southey (4/20) and Castle (2/22) were the SWCC star performers with the leather.

At the start of their time in front of the wickets, the hosts found themselves in trouble early with the score at 16/1 in the third over.

Wiehan Meyer (66) then came to the crease along with Larry Morkel (40); the pair steadied the ship and garnered a handy 70-run partnership.

After the loss of Morkel, Meyer and his batting partners continued to pursue the target in a controlled fashion, and SW eventually crossed the line in the 45th over with four wickets to spare.

Meanwhile, the SWCC women’s team enjoyed a good start to the second half of the season, comfortably beating Kuils River CC in a Women’s First Division A top-six match at Radloff Park on Sunday.

The home side won the toss and put visitors in to bat. From the get-go, some very good bowling and energetic fielding prevented the visiting team from really getting started, and they were eventually all back in cloakrooms with the score on only 94 runs.

The SW bowlers who performed well with the ball were 12-year-old Imaan van Skalkwyk (4/22) and Melanie Davidson (4/26).

The Somerset West lasses then took to the field in pursuit of the small target, comfortably reaching it within 20 overs. The batting prowess of Mandy McIlroy must once again be lauded, as she again led her team to a bonus-point victory by contributing a sensible 44 runs.

V The SW first team hosts Bishop Lavis CC at Radloff Park on Saturday (15 February).
