SWCC tournament winners

The fourth annual JOYA Somerset West Cricket Club u-12 T20 tournament was held from 26 to 28 September.

The tournament is restricted to 12 teams, which this year consisted of the top clubs in the Western Cape: SWCC, Blue Bells CC, Ottomans CC, All Rounders Academy, Sunningdale CC, Durbanville CC, Solomon Makhosana, Green Point CC and Primrose CC, as well as the Namibian national team and Somerset College.

Each team played two T20 games per day, and matches were played at Radloff Park, Somerset College and Parel Vallei High School.

“This is a physically demanding tournament as teams played six matches in three days in what was very hot weather, but very good cricket was played by the teams,” commented Karlien Scholtz, tournament convener.

Somerset West CC was announced as tournament winners, with All Rounder Academy second and Ottomans CC in third place.

Juan James (SWCC) was named Player of the Tournament. The top batsman was Mogamat Lagadien (Ottomans CC). Top bowler award went to Kyle Warrender from Sunningdale and the Sportsmanship Award was won by Matt Saunder from All Rounders.

“The tournament places emphasis on sportsmanship and hard work,” said Scholtz, adding that Ibraheem Taliep, Khanyisile Sojola, Fawaaz Hendricks and Yanga Kopana all received commendation for their sportsmanship on the field.

At the prize-giving ceremony, David Brooke (Brand and Sponsorship Manager WPCA and the Cape Cobras), spoke to the young cricketers about the importance of playing for your team.

He noted that the team logo was always on the side of the heart which means that you play cricket like you should, with passion straight from the heart, and if you play for the team, people will remember the name on the back of the shirt.
