Tourney sees accomplished display

The Et’sons Warriors, champions for the past two seasons at the Hot Summer of Touch rugby series, confirmed their third title in a row with an accomplished display over the holidays, finishing top of the table and walking away with the championship trophy.

The Strand-based team was among six in the Helderberg basin that finished in the top eight of the Pro Series.

In the next division – the Challenger Series – Macassar-based Team Composure won the division, which they dominated this year, and promotion to the Pro Series next season.

Hot Summer of Touch is an important platform for up-and-coming rugby stars, and at least four Springboks have come through the series, including Damian Willemse, Cheslin Kolbe, Earl Rose and Dillyn Leyds in recent years.

According to spokesperson Grahame Bobrow, weather is always an important factor during the series and this made it difficult for at least two stages of the six-stage competition last year.

“There was dramatic wind at Kleinmond and Camps Bay, which made the contest really difficult for teams and also kept some spectators away. The Strand leg, though, was by far the most successful, in which we had 65 teams participate in perfect sunny and windless conditions. It was here that thousands of spectators and fans came to support their teams.”

Second and third place in the Grand Prix Standings were also Strand teams, Rising Samurai Warriors and Living Legends, respectively.

Legends have over the years proven to be the most successful team in the series.

Fourth place went to Galaxy Warriors of Bo-Kaap and in fifth Reds, also from Strand. Macassar-based Maori Kings finished sixth, and Mossel Bay team Garden Route Saints ended in seventh.

The team who finished eighth and which were relegated is another Helderberg team, Pacific Blues.

“It’s been an incredibly successful event,” said Bobrow. “There’s no prize money or any major prizes, it all comes down to pride and passion for the game. It was absolutely wonderful to see the tightly contested games across so many beaches and players and spectators having a thoroughly good time. Fans and players were impeccably well behaved, and it was overall a brilliant season.”
