Will clubs claw their way back?

With five matches remaining in the top three Western Province club rugby leagues, it is becoming a real scramble for points.

All Saints find themselves in the bottom four of Super League B, while St George’s are in a similar position in Super League A. Both clubs have tough upcoming fixtures and we hold thumbs that they can get the required results to remain in the respective leagues.

The rest of the fixtures for this weekend are:

  • Strand United vs Busy Bees (Abattoir)

United continued their topsy-turvy season, going down to Goodwood last week after two consecutive wins. Busy Bees are always unpredictable and will come to Strand with the intention of wanting to throw a spanner in the works for United’s Top 6 competition aspirations. Another loss for United will make it difficult for them to cement that position on the log, but the home team are always tough at Abattoir.

Prediction: United to win by eight or more

  • Helderberg vs Hands & Heart (Eikendal)

It was very sad to hear of the murder of Hands & Heart coach Nicolus Pedro last week, which led to the postponement of their match against Rangers. Berge is in third place on the Super League B log and could still launch a strong challenge for a top-two position along with an automatic home semi-final in the Top 6 competition. However, the hosts emotional state will certainly spur them on to fight to the end.

Prediction: Helderberg to win by 20 or more.

  • All Saints vs Paarl (Faure Street)

Saints lifted themselves to get two valuable points out of their last match against Primrose. Paarl are currently in second place on the Super League B log and will undoubtedly be much tougher and, most probably, a step too high for the visitors. If the Somerset West team loses this match, they will know how important it is to pick up a losing bonus point and a point for scoring four tries.

Prediction: All Saints to lose by 10 or more

  • Macassar vs Elsies River (Elsies Park)

Unbeaten MC Boys should not have too much trouble getting over this hurdle, although its an away game. Elsies will be physical, but will struggle to keep up with the pace of Macassar. Already confirmed of a Top 6 competition spot, the MC Boys will want to push hard to win the league outright.

Prediction: Macassar to win by 10 or more

  • Sir Lowrians vs Goodwood (Sir Lowry’s Pass)

Sir Lowrians come off a heavy loss to Busy Bees and now have to deal with a Goodwood side that have clinched three consecutive victories. The Navy Train needs to focus on getting any point from every remaining fixture, but that is easier said than done. This could end up being another long afternoon for the hosts.

Prediction: Sir Lowrians to lose by 18 or more

  • St George’s vs False Bay (Gustrouw)

False Bay are the defending Gold Cup champions and are pushing hard to be the best open club in Super League A, behind the varsity clubs. They will not be coming to Gustrouw to do anyone else favours. The Lulu Boys could be in for a long weekend if they don’t go against the grain of how they will be expected to play. Fighting fire with fire is a tactic that has not worked for the hosts.

Prediction: St George’s to lose by 20 or more
