YB record mixed results

All teams of Young Bafana Soccer Academy (YB) played matches against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday 14 March.

The under-12 YB team produced a greatly improved display this week, down by 2–0.

The addition of three new recruits bolstered the team considerably and YB held their opponents to 0-0 for most of the match. The lads showed that they can hold their own and play an attractive brand of soccer against more fancied opponents.

Coach Bernd Steinhage was much happier with his team’s showing, stating that with more hard work he aims to bring this young team to its full potential. “The team is still very young even for the under-12 section, with plenty of time to mould them into a formidable side,” he explains.

The YB under-14 team went down 2-1 to Stellenbosch. It was the second week in a row that the side went down by the odd goal. The match was evenly contested with YB having a slight advantage in terms of possession and territory for 70% of the game.

YB missed a golden chance to take the lead shortly before half-time by not converting a penalty, but took the lead soon after via a great header by Solethu Mabhenu, leading 1-0 at half time.

Early in the second half Stellenbosch scored an equaliser from a corner. YB pressed for a winner but could not finish off some good attacking moves. Substitutions in the last 15 minutes allowed Stellenbosch to dominate and cruel luck was to follow with five minutes to go when the referee allowed a Stellenbosch attacker to score after a blatant trip of a YB defender heading to clear the ball.

The YB under-16 team also went down to Stellenbosch by 4-0.

After a gutsy performance against Ubuntu FC last week, the under-16 team were confident of a good result against Stellenbosch.

However this was not to be as they were battled to find form and allowed Stellenbosch to dominate after half-time and run out easy winners.

“The under-16 squad is a talented one, but needs to knuckle down and do the hard work in the match to realise their full potential,” said coach Graham Knott.

“At times they played constructive football and moved the ball around well, but lacked the skills to finish off attacking moves to pose a threat to Stellenbosch.”

The YB under-18 team were comfortable 3-1 victors over their Stellenbosch counterparts.

In a tough uncompromising encounter, YB fought hard for the win. The team has three players who are still under-16 and Stellenbosch used the rule of being allowed to play five players over the age of 18, so the victory is by all accounts a fine achievement.

Stellenbosch took an early lead and YB came back to go into half-time with the score deadlocked at 1-1.

Shortly after half-time YB took the lead and dominated to score again and seal the 3-1 victory.
