LET’S MAKE STELLENBOSCH THE “FRIENDLY TOWN” (Eikestadnuus, 3 November 1989) What motivates consumers to buy locally? This is the question posed by the President of the Chamber of Commerce in Stellenbosch Mr Lewis Silberbauer. “One should ask oneself the following: Is the article you require available, is there a back-up service, is the price right, what is the attitude of the seller, was the buyer greeted with a smile and courteously received and are possible complaints received sympathetically?” All of these questions are relevant and if the answer to any of them is “no,” then the buyer is sub-consciously or consciously going to look elsewhere for the product or service required.

Port Elizabeth is known as the “friendly city”, a name which was not given lightly, for it is a friendly city. Shopping in and around Port Elizabeth is an absolute pleasure and it is no wonder then that it has grown in popularity as a tourist destination. Stellenbosch has infinitely more to offer, but possibly has a lot to learn when it comes to handling prospective customers. The Afrikaanse Sakekamer and Chamber of Commerce are launching a scheme to promote excellence in all areas of service which could benefit both consumer and businessman and thus stimulate local buying. The Stellenbosch Publicity Association has noted that tourism-potential in Stellenbosch has not really been fully exploited and are presently endeavouring to gain as much local support as possible in order to achieve their objectives regarding the situation. More must be done to extend and improve facilities if full advantage is to be taken of the growth in tourism. Income generated from tourism passed the R1 billion mark in the Western Cape last year and an additional 170 000 visitors are expected during the coming year. South Africa was listed 22nd out of 23 countries in terms of service excellence.
