Alleged killer in court

The case against a 28-year-old man accused of murdering ex-Stellenbosch Deputy Mayor Cameron Mcako has been postponed until 5 May for further investigation.

Phumlani Sibonge remains in custody until his next appearance, after his lawyer told the court he will not apply for bail during his second appearance in Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 12 March.

“We are not abandoning the bail application completely, but for now we are not bringing it due to circumstances,” Sibonge’s lawyer told the magistrate.

The court was packed full of residents from Kayamandi, including family members of Mcako. Community members handed over a petition against bail for Sibonge. With 130 signatures, it read: “We are not safe. Please protect us. We deserve a safe place. Make Kayamandi safe. Make Stellenbosch safe. Make Cape Winelands safe. Make Western Cape safe. Make South Africa safe. Make Africa safe. The world must be a safe place.”

Mcako was shot on 1 November 2019, around 22:30, in his tavern, Happy Rest. He died in hospital two days later.

According to Nathalie Martin, Stellenbosch police spokesperson, Sibonge was arrested at Khayelitsha Court on 2 March 2020 while appearing for another murder case.

“There is no further comment at this stage, as the case is still under investigation,” she said.
