Arrests after good response

Stellenbosch residents have been reminded to be alert to the possible presence of “remote jammers” following an incident in town recently. A vehicle was allegedly broken into by two suspects on Friday 2 October after they had used a remote jammer to gain access.

“We received an alert message on the Stellenbosch reaction WhatsApp group describing how a resident had parked her car outside a shop along Merriman Street,” Verena Hulme, Cape Town North District Manager at Fidelity ADT, related.

“On leaving the shop she realised items in her car had been stolen. The shop’s security cameras provided video footage of two alleged suspects gaining access to her car shortly after she had arrived and walked into the store.

The complainant started searching the area and soon located two suspects who matched the description provided by the video footage. She spotted the men on the corner of Bird and Plein Street, stopped a passing Stellenbosch Watch patrol vehicle for assistance, and pointed them out.

“The Stellenbosch Watch patroller requested our back-up,” Hulme said, “and one of our armed response officers assisted in detaining the two suspects. Her stolen items were not recovered as they had reportedly already been given to a third accomplice. The two suspects were handed into police custody, and it was later determined one of them was out on parole at the time.”

In a separate incident on the same day a suspect was arrested in Die Boord after allegedly trespassing on a residential property.

“One of our officers received a call from the homeowner in Culemborg Street asking for urgent assistance as an unknown person had gained access to his property,” Hulme related. “Our officer requested back-up from a colleague, and they both soon arrived at the address.

“On arrival, they encountered the unknown person leaving through a gate, and he was promptly apprehended and handed into police custody on a charge of trespassing.”
