Chrysanthemums show off in the Idas Valley Volkskerk

The Stellenbosch Horticultural and Industrial Society held their annual Chrysanthemum show in the Idas Valley Volkskerk last Saturday.

The event was attended by a member of the Japanese embassy in Cape Town and Dave Pepler, well-known environmentalist, was the guest speaker.

Hundreds of chrysanthemum flowers were on show.

The Stellenbosch Horticultural and Industrial Society was established in 1962. The society was established with the goal to grow the largest, the best and most perfect chrysanthemum flowers in all available cultivars.

The founding members of the society were Leonard Gabriels, Alfred Williams, AP Lamberts, WA Stone and H Muller, all well-known businessmen. Muller is the only living founding member and is still an active member of the society. He is a registered adjudicator and an experienced grower in clivias and the chrysanthemum growers’ competition. He is also involved in the annual September Clivia show in Bellville as adjudicator.

The Stellenbosch Horticultural and Industrial Society is a registered member of the National Chrysanthemum Society of Great Britain and the National Horticultural and Industrial Society of South Africa (WC).

The knowledge to grow chrysanthemums as an exhibition flower was transferred over the years from founding members to the current active members.

These members received no formal education in horticulture but their knowledge about the growing of this unique flower was accomplished through practical workshops at the homes of members.

Regular monthly meeting are held on the first Tuesday of each month where the progress of the society, physically and financially is discussed. A report from each member (grower) about the process of the growing of the chrysanthemum is discussed at these meetings.

The growing of chrysanthemums starts in July/August and reaches its hight in April/May of the following year when members exhibit their flowers and compare them at club and National level.
