e’Bosch Heritage Festival celebrating our heritage

Celebrating our heritage while acknowledging the mistakes of our past was this year’s theme at the launch of the 2018 e’Bosch Heritage Festival.

The launch event was held at the Stellenbosch University museum on Wednesday 29 August.

All the guest speakers including mayor Gesie van Deventer and former public protector Thuli Madonsela touched on the importance of heritage. “Binding communities together with culture is one of the best things you can do,” said Van Deventer.

Rector and vice-chancellor professor Wim de Villiers acknowledged the role of the university “in the injustices of the past” and committed to creating an inclusive world class university.

Madonsela said it is important to her that we build bridges by healing the divisions of the past. She said although we don’t decide what our heritage is, we can decide what we do with our heritage and what kind of heritage we leave for the next generation.

“We need to talk about the past in order to avoid repeating it. We must deal with the heritage of our past in a way that advances social justice,” according to Madonsela.

The evening ended with eight individuals receiving honorary awards for their contribution to the conservation of our heritage in the greater Stellenbosch region.

Individuals who completed this year’s community leadership course also received their certificates.
