Justice system not doing enough for women
Safe House

“The justice system fails women.”

This was the conclusion reached at a summit on gender based violence attended by advocate Alice Wilton, CEO of Stellenbosch Safe House.

Wilton was speaking at the Stellenbosch Safe House’s launch of their 16 Days of Activism campaign in the Stellenbosch Town Hall on Sunday 25 November.

Wilton shared some of the stories of the women who spoke at the summit. Women who were kidnapped, raped and maimed and how the justice system failed to help them. “Hilda described how she was abducted for two weeks and subjected to cultural practices to force her to marry a man from her community. No one was prosecuted.”

The Safe House is an NGO which serves as a safe haven for abused women and children and victims of human trafficking. Survivors stay in the house for three to four months.

According to Wilton, the Safe House would like to do more by increasing their constitutional prerogative so that their services include a multi-disciplinary and holistic rehabilitation programme including social services by a registered and accredited social worker and access to skills development services. The Safe House has already initiated basic life skills training, fire fighting and self-defence for staff and residents.

“We also empower our victims to understand and access legal mechanisms with the assistance of the justice services personnel at the local magistrate’s court. These empowerment tools complement the social services component. It creates awareness and understanding of all available resources.

“During the 16 Days of Activism we want to plead with the people of our community to speak out and be part of the solution to this toxic behaviour.”
