New initiatives to give recycling a boost

Recycling in Stellenbosch will soon be boosted by a number of new initiatives by the municipality.

“The municipality encourages communities to recycle and has various initiatives in place to stimulate a culture of recycling,” says the municipality’s communications manager Stuart Grobbelaar.

“Many residents are already passionate about recycling and are green at heart,”

Economic instruments have been implemented where disposal of general waste is among the highest, encouraging waste minimisation as the alternative (which includes recycling that is collected for free).

The municipality is currently in the planning phase of a material recovery facility and in the process of drafting a new waste by-law.

“The municipality will also continue with its successful roll-out of awareness and educational campaigns to engage more people in recycling,” says Grobbelaar. “These campaigns are targeted at schools and young people.”

The new structure of the solid waste management department has made allowance for a dedicated awareness and education component to drive the efforts for waste minimisation.

He says inroads have already been made with the lower socio-economic groups by virtue of introducing the SwopShop concept.

This, Grobbelaar says, largely disproves the widely accepted notion or myth that recycling can work only in middle or higher-income areas.

“Our innovative methods to extend recycling to as many communities as possible have worked well and we will continue with this approach,” he declared.
