New NGO aims to motivate community

Three pageant winners have joined forces to form their own non-profit organisation.

SJ Community Hearts is the brainchild of Sonja Adonis, Johan Daniels and Kyle Adams.

“Through paperwork, telephone calls and Zoom meetings, we were able to connect with various people, who assisted us with registering our NPO,” a press release from the organisation said.

Adams explained the idea behind the NPO: “It is intended to give us a platform to uplift, inspire and brighten up lives everywhere and not to focus on just one community. The pageantry world gave us the platform to do random acts of kindness in our communities on a daily basis.

“As directors of SJ Community Hearts, each of us has a title – Mr Stellenbosch 2017 (Adams), Mrs Stellenbosch 2017 (Adonis) and Mr South Africa Heart 2019 (Daniels). Through all their outreach we teamed up and decided to start our own organisation.”

According to Adams, the organisation will focus on, among other things, community outreaches, motivational speeches, the distribution of food parcels and youth development.

“As the founders of SJ Community Hearts we will stay true to our mission of being role-models to our communities, country and globally by addressing the needs, rights of women, men, and children, the poor and the vulnerable. We will do our best in giving hope to the underprivileged and ensure our youth are given the opportunity to dream and to be all that they can be notwithstanding their circumstances.”

His and others’ various pageant roles have enabled them to build relationships with businesses and other organisations in Stellenbosch.

“We have teamed up with other stakeholders in the community, including StellCare, Stellenbosch Night Shelter and Stellenbosch Safe House. Together we have taken on challenges as role-models to uplift and motivate community members. We believe that there is power in numbers and as SJ Community Hearts we can achieve great things by maintaining the support of these stakeholders in our community.”

In its vision statement SJ Community Hearts says youth empowerment and development is of utmost importance.

“We are grateful for each challenge so far, as it has helped us achieve our goals in focusing on the youth as we feel that they are the most important group of our country. We realised we cannot forget about our future generation. We need to build and invest in them on a daily basis.”
