Rescuers use GPS to find lost hikers

On Thursday, 20 August, Stellenbosch Fire and Rescue Services responded to an incident where two youngsters were reported lost on the Coetzenberg mountain.

According to a statement by municipal spokesperson, Stuart Grobbelaar, the youngsters decided to take a hike and were overcome by the fog and became disorientated. GPS co-ordinates were exchanged and fire fighters drove with a 4x4 vehicle as far as the mountainous terrain allowed them after which they walked another hour.

“An added advantage to the search and rescue crew was that reservist fire fighter Martin van Wyk (a frequent hiker of the area) was luckily familiar with the surroundings. There was constant communication with the youngsters to reassure them until they were eventually found physically unharmed. They were brought to the fire station where their vital signs were checked before they were taken home and reunited with their families.”
