Solomon plays a final note

“He was someone who uplifted the communities he stayed in. He was an amazing man.” This is how Mervyn Solomon local conductor, band director and brass teacher will be remembered by those close to him.

Solomon passed away on Thursday 24 May. He was a well-known musician and is described by his colleagues at the Stellenbosch Conservatorium as someone who will be dearly missed.

He had a passion for what he did and spent most of his life travelling all over the world sharing his talent.

Solomon was a member of the South African Navy Band for four years before becoming a teacher in Port Elizabeth.

He moved down to Cape Town where he established the Pinelands High School Symphony Orchestra. While there he joined the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society Orchestra of which he was principal trumpet and orchestra manger from 1979-1990.

Solomon was the conductor for the Stellenbosch University Wind Ensemble and while under his direction the band took five highly acclaimed tours to the United Kingdom.

He moved to the United Kingdom in 1999 and returned to South Africa to take up a position at the Kimberly Boys High School.

Solomon will be remembered most for his involvement in the music fraternity. “It was an honour to be conducted by you. You were exceptional,” wrote an old student of Solomon, Renee van den Berg. Erik Albertyn remembered Solomon as a great musician and friend. The SU Ensemble dedicated their concert this past week to the life of Solomon.
