Glen Eagles wins derby after defensive second half

Glen Eagles FC last week outscored Spes Bona FC by 2-1 in the first derby of the 2019/’20 season.

The first half was an up-and-down affair with Spes Bona creating more opportunities, but they could not convert their chances. In typical derby fashion the tackles were rock-hard on each other, but the referee in charge quickly took control by handing out four yellow cards within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Eagles made an early substitute in the 35th minute bringing on Trudor Adams, who immediately tested Bonas’ goalkeeper with a good shot from 40 m out.

After the break Eagles made another two changes, bringing on Ricardo Mciteka and Gradwill Pietersen, who lifted the tempo of the game and brought them their first goal. Mciteka played a short corner to Alvin Manuel who laid it off to Pietersen, who then took a shot which deflected into Bonas’ goal.

After taking the lead, Eagles had more control over the game and were rewarded with another goal from Trudor, catching the keeper off guard with a long range shot.

Right after the goal the former SA u-21 captain, Jason Skippers, was red carded following a second yellow card offence. Spes Bona lifted themselves and replied with a quick playing goal. From their pass they played wide to the right midfielder who took a cross and was headed in by Nathan Adams.

The last 10 minutes were a nervy affair for Eagles with Bona pushing hard for that equaliser. Eagles could have added more goals but squandered their chances.
