Maroon machine rolls over TUT

Maties demolished TUT 47-16 on Monday night in Stellenbosch, after a stellar performance from the maroon machine.

The home team led 11-3 after the first quarter. Their defence, led by veterans Sasha-Lee Petersen and Jo Prins, held firm and turned the ball around quickly through Khomotso Mamburu.

Despite a powerplay being called the third quarter there was a lack of energy among the Maties and TUT outscored the hosts in the quarter, eight goals to six.

The score of 31-14 meant that Maties had it all to do in order to claim a bonus point for goal scoring and chase down the required 19 goals to do so.

The final quarter saw the second powerplay and while Maties did manage to score twice in that period, they had left themselves with too much of a mountain to climb and they did not breach the 50-goal mark.

Captain Nichole Taljaard and fellow sharpshooter Sian Moore tried their best, but were unable to reach the required tally.

Maties next travel to Port Elizabeth for a double-header weekend where they face the Madibaz in a coastal derby before a mouthwatering clash against Tuks in Round 4 the day after. TUT face Kovsies and UJ in Bloemfontein and need to keep flying their flag high in the 2019 Varsity Netball campaign. - Varsity Sport
